It takes us from the volatile insurance markets of Latin America to the highly competitive landscape of the USA and makes it clear that the crucial question is not whether a market is attractive, but how to enter it.

Between oversupply and disorientation

A walk along Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse illustrates the dilemma of many markets: choice in abundance. If you want to buy a watch, you are faced with countless options. Even with a large budget, the decision becomes a challenge. The situation is similar in the insurance industry. With its size, diversity and dynamism, the USA appears to be an enticing market. But it is precisely this diversity that makes it so difficult to get started.

For companies without sufficient capital to take over established players, there is often only one arduous option: entering into partnerships and building up a portfolio from scratch. An undertaking that many consider risky or even irrational.

Jumping into the “shark tank“

Alfredo and his consultant George chose precisely this path. Instead of operating in saturated standard segments, they deliberately opted for an area that many insurers avoid: so-called excess & surplus lines.

These are risks that exclude traditional providers, such as amusement parks, bars and nightclubs. Business areas with a high degree of uncertainty, but also with a decisive advantage: less regulation and therefore greater freedom in terms of pricing and contract definition.

Stepping into this “shark tank” required not only specialist knowledge, but also an almost reckless willingness to take risks. At the same time, it was strategically clever. Because where others withdraw, the most attractive margins often arise.

Success through specialization and partnership

The business was not built up single-handedly. A trusting cooperation with a reinsurer formed the basis for sustainable growth. This partnership made it possible to share risks and build up expertise at the same time.

Over the years, the company has developed into a highly profitable specialist and an example of how a consistent focus on a niche can create competitive advantages.

Long-term thinking as a decisive factor

However, the central insight of this story lies deeper. In addition to choosing the right market niche and appointing outstanding leaders, it was above all the perspective that made the difference.

Success was not achieved through quarterly figures, but over a period of years. Patience became a strategic asset. In an industry that is increasingly driven by short-term results, this approach seems almost contradictory, which is precisely why it is so effective.

The art of market selection therefore lies not only in recognizing opportunities, but also in having the courage to swim against the tide and the discipline to think long-term.

Binci Heeb

Paul the Insurer has other content that may interest you, such as the series of interviews with insurance industry executives.

Read and listen to: The lesson from Bolivia

If you want to survive in saturated markets, you need more than capital; you need clarity, courage and staying power.
