Those who want to grow today are building ecosystems. But what does this mean in concrete terms for the market and why does this approach open up completely new perspectives?

The term “ecosystem” originally comes from nature, where it describes the interaction of different actors within a habitat. In the insurance world, this term has developed into a strategic guiding principle. It refers to a network of insurers, service providers and digital platforms that work together to create added value for customers.

An example from Switzerland shows how this approach works: An established insurance cooperative has systematically built up and acquired service companies in recent years. The aim was to strengthen its own market presence, gain new customer access and offer additional services. These activities were bundled in a joint structure and together with partners from the publishing industry and an innovation-driven investment fund.

The result is a broad-based network that goes far beyond traditional insurance and integrates solutions in the areas of real estate, mobility and finance.

Growth beyond expansion

Especially in saturated markets such as Switzerland, traditional growth strategies reach their limits. International expansion is often associated with high risks and limited prospects of success. The development of an ecosystem offers an attractive alternative here: growth is no longer achieved primarily through geographical expansion, but rather through the expansion of the range of services.

It is crucial that the individual companies within this network retain their entrepreneurial freedom. Innovation does not arise in highly regulated corporate structures, but where new ideas are allowed to emerge and risks are consciously taken.

Independence as a success factor

A key principle for the success of such ecosystems is the structural independence of the companies involved. While insurers traditionally calculate and limit risks, innovative service providers need exactly the opposite: room for experimentation and the willingness to fail.

This is why these units are often deliberately organized outside of the traditional insurance business, often together with external partners who contribute additional expertise and market access. The shareholding structure also plays an important role: if founders and managers hold shares themselves, the entrepreneurial momentum is maintained.

New working environments are emerging

The development of such ecosystems is not only changing business models, but also the labor market. New job profiles in technology, data analysis, the platform economy and customer service are increasingly emerging in the insurance sector.

This makes the industry more attractive to specialists who previously had no connection to the traditional insurance world. Insurance is thus developing from a supposedly conservative industry into a dynamic environment with diverse career opportunities.

A strategic paradigm shift

The key insight: insurers have long been more than just providers of policies and claims handling. They are becoming platforms that connect different areas of life and thus create new added value.

The development of ecosystems is not a short-term trend, but a strategic paradigm shift – especially in markets where traditional growth paths have been exhausted. Those who understand and actively shape this change will play a decisive role in shaping the future of the industry.

Binci Heeb

Paul the Insurer has other content that may interest you, such as the series of interviews with insurance industry executives.

Listen and read also: The courage to find a niche

The insurance industry is changing from a pure risk carrier to a networked service provider.
