But what happens when efficiency meets creativity? An intellectual experiment with the American composer and insurance expert Charles Ives shows how topical this question is.

In the podcast “Paul the Insurer”, a fascinating image emerges: computers communicating with each other in a kind of “compliance language”. What sounds technical today is almost reminiscent of music from this perspective. Rules become notes, processes become compositions.

For Charles Ives, who wrote avant-garde music with unusual rhythms and harmonies, this development would have been more than just a technological advance. He would probably have seen it as a new form of expression. Regulatory requirements could be read like a sonata: structured, but open to interpretation.

But this is precisely where the tension lies: while machines are designed for precision, music, and good underwriting too, thrives on nuances, on deliberate deviations, on a feel for the right moment.

Between efficiency and loss of control

The automation of compliance promises considerable advantages. Processes could become faster, more transparent and error-free. The direct exchange between insurers and supervisory authorities would no longer be a vision, but a reality.

At the same time, this development raises fundamental questions. Fully automated supervision could lead to a new form of centralized control. Decisions would no longer be made by people, but by systems that strictly interpret the rules.

Ives, who was sceptical about excessive commercialization and concentration of power throughout his life, would have been ambivalent about this development. Innovation yes, but not at the price of autonomy and critical thinking.

The soul of underwriting

In the early insurance world, compliance was based on personal responsibility and integrity. Today, we are moving towards algorithmic decision-making structures. The leap is enormous, both technologically and culturally.

But despite all the progress, one key insight remains: Machines can optimize processes, but they cannot replace the judgment of experienced experts. The ability to grasp risks holistically, recognize correlations and sometimes decide against the beat remains human.

Perhaps the most important message of the podcast lies right here: Progress must not mean that critical thinking is lost. Systems can support, but they should not dominate.

Technology needs attitude

The vision of an automated, seamlessly integrated insurance world is tempting. But it requires more than technological excellence. It requires a clear attitude in dealing with power, responsibility and freedom of choice.

Or, to use Charles Ives’ logic: even the most perfect machine can keep time, but it doesn’t know when it’s time to consciously break it.

The future of the insurance industry will therefore not be determined by technology alone, but by the people who shape it.

Binci Heeb

Paul the Insurer has other content that may interest you, such as the series of interviews with insurance industry executives.

Read also: From Kafka’s nightmare to digital insurance

The digitalization of the insurance world is progressing and with it the vision that systems will not only exchange data, but also interpret and implement regulatory requirements independently.
