In Paul the Insurer’s latest podcast, Viracocha serves as a surprising metaphor for a world increasingly shaped by self-learning systems. The episode poses a central question of our time: who is in charge when the technologies we have created begin to make decisions on their own?

During a stay in Cusco, the former capital of the Inca empire, Paul the Insurer picks up on the legend of Viracocha. In Inca mythology, Viracocha is regarded as the great creator god. He created heaven, earth and mankind, brought order to chaos and taught people how they should live. Afterwards, however, he disappeared across the ocean and left his creation to its own devices.

It is precisely this last aspect that makes the story so fascinating for the present day. Viracocha created a world that continued to exist without his constant control. For Paul the Insurer, this is reminiscent of today’s development of artificial intelligence: systems are created, trained and released into the world, where they act increasingly independently.

When AI becomes the new Viracocha

The episode paints an impressive picture of the technological present. The gods of our time are no longer made of gold or stone, but of algorithms, data and computing power. Artificial intelligence has long been found in language assistants, forecasting models and automated decision-making processes.

The insurance industry is also directly affected by this. Automated underwriting, risk modeling and predictive analytics are changing the way risks are assessed and decisions are made. AI systems are constantly learning and often evolve faster than their developers originally intended.

In this perspective, Viracocha becomes a metaphor for the digital architects of our time: developers, technology companies and data scientists who create systems whose impact extends far beyond their initial control.

Who bears the responsibility?

However, the real message of the podcast is not the technology itself, but the question of responsibility. When algorithms increasingly intervene in decisions about health, finances or insurability, the question arises as to who ultimately retains control.

Paul the Insurer describes a world in which many people feel that systems are increasingly controlling them. At the same time, he points out that this development does not necessarily mean that we have lost control. Perhaps, according to the central thesis, we ourselves have long since become the new architects.

The challenge is to make technological innovation not only efficient, but also responsible. Insurance companies play a special role here. They are one of the sectors that analyze risks, evaluate future scenarios and create trust. They are therefore at the forefront when it comes to shaping the ethical and transparent use of artificial intelligence.

The future is not programmed, but shaped

The podcast ends with a thought that extends far beyond the insurance industry. The future is not created by technology alone. It will be shaped by the people who decide how these technologies are used.

Viracocha may have created the world and left it. However, the responsibility for what becomes of it lies with humans. At a time when artificial intelligence is influencing more and more areas of life, this realization is more relevant than ever.

Insurance is therefore more than just a profession or an industry. It is becoming an instrument for actively shaping an increasingly complex and technology-driven future.

Binci Heeb

Paul the Insurer has other content that may interest you, such as the series of interviews with insurance industry executives.

Read also: When AI becomes a mirror

What does an Incan god of creation have to do with artificial intelligence and the insurance industry?
