The focus is on three major topics: the use of artificial intelligence in risk and compliance, the growing importance of climate and technology risks, and the strategic implications of an aging society. The podcast makes it clear: The risk landscape is not changing in isolated instances, but on multiple levels simultaneously.

At the Risk-!n Conference, the role of artificial intelligence in compliance and risk management was the focus of discussion. The key takeaway from the conference is that while AI can support processes, it does not replace human responsibility. One of the biggest challenges is avoiding human biases right from the design phase of AI systems. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of human approval of AI outputs as well as the continuous monitoring of the systems in use. Risks within supply chains also came into focus, particularly with regard to security breaches caused by suppliers. The fundamental question of to what extent technical expertise actually protects against bias remains open. This challenge will continue to accompany the industry.

Climate Change and Technology Are Exacerbating the Risk Situation

Swiss Re, for its part, addresses the challenges and strategies related to global climate and technological change in a recent climate newsletter. According to the newsletter, rising temperatures are increasingly threatening infrastructure and productivity, making early-warning systems and innovative insurance models necessary. At the same time, investment in AI infrastructure is growing rapidly, giving rise to new risk profiles. The electric mobility sector, in particular, is confronting insurers with rising repair costs. Developing countries are also affected by climate risks, which is why the early integration of insurance principles into development strategies is considered crucial. The common thread running through all these developments: risks are not only becoming more frequent, but also more complex.

Longer life expectancies are changing the landscape of retirement planning

Demographic change and longer life expectancies present insurers with strategic challenges that extend far beyond traditional life insurance issues. A key factor here is the distinction between pure life expectancy and healthy life expectancy, which is forcing insurance companies to fundamentally realign their strategies. On the one hand, the retirement of experienced employees threatens to result in a loss of valuable knowledge. On the other hand, the older generation—often described as travel-loving and health-conscious—presents significant market opportunities. Insurers are therefore required to tailor their product development specifically to this target group in order to remain competitive.

Switzerland in the midst of demographic change

Demographic changes also threaten the Swiss pension system and affect labor markets, financial markets, and the real estate sector alike. The growing proportion of retirees relative to the working population is forcing reforms, such as pension cuts or longer working hours. In the discussion of possible solutions, immigration also plays a central role as a balancing factor. The housing market is likewise under pressure due to changing preferences, particularly with regard to the rising demand for smaller housing units.

A look at Japan illustrates the seriousness of the situation. The birth rate in Switzerland is now well below the replacement rate, and projections indicate that by 2050, more than 15,000 people in Switzerland will be over 100 years old. In this context, migration is being discussed as a potential counterbalancing factor, although a broader societal debate on the topic appears urgently necessary in order to develop future-proof strategies in the economic and political spheres.

Rüschlikon Broker Forum: Regulation and Generational Transition as a Dual Challenge

The sixth Insurance Broker Forum in Rüschlikon focused on key challenges facing the Swiss insurance industry. In addition to regulatory changes and rising cyber risks, the event also examined the critical nature of traditional practices. In particular, the partial revision of the Insurance Supervision Act and the associated increase in bureaucracy are causing dissatisfaction within the industry. Digital transformation processes, however, are being viewed positively, especially in the area of customer service. The industry must also increasingly adapt to the expectations of the younger generation, which, on the one hand, expects flexibility and authentic communication, but on the other hand, also seeks security and opportunities for growth.

Sustainability as a Strategic Priority

An analysis of this episode makes it clear that today’s insurance industry faces a twofold challenge. On the one hand, products and services must be adapted to the needs of an aging population that is not only living longer but also leading healthier and more active lives. This distinction between life expectancy and healthy life expectancy offers significant potential for innovative insurance coverage that goes beyond traditional life insurance. At the same time, the retirement of experienced employees threatens to result in the loss of valuable expertise unless knowledge transfer within companies is actively managed.

Future-readiness thus emerges when insurers and brokers not only monitor new risks but also consistently incorporate them into their strategies, products, and organizational structures. Early-stage training programs, cross-generational teams, and customized products could serve as key building blocks for capitalizing on both technological innovation and human expertise.

Binci Heeb

Listen to and read: LBC Insurance Radar #13: AI Meets Insurance

In the 14th episode of the LBC Insurance Radar, Marco La Bella takes a close look at the current developments that are most pressing for insurers and brokers right now.
