Paul, the voice behind “Paul the Insurer,” gave it a try. And in doing so, he raised a question that runs deeper than the morning industry newsletter might suggest: Where does the insurable end, and where does life itself begin?

It all started with an unremarkable news item from the Brazilian insurance market: A leading provider had launched liability insurance policies for eleven occupational groups. For most industry observers, this was a routine occurrence, just another line in the daily flood of news. For Paul, it was the starting point for a thought experiment that shows how closely innovation and imagination are linked when one is willing not only to read a news item but also to think it through.

If Insurance Policies Covered Emotions

What if insurance companies could cover not just finances, but emotions as well? Paul lets his imagination run wild: a policy for sleepless nights after watching a gripping crime thriller. Coverage for nightmares after visiting a contemporary art installation. Compensation for soccer fans whose idol leaves the club to play in Europe. Coverage for tour operators whose customers don’t see enough animals in the Pantanal. Trauma coverage for drivers in São Paulo, plagued by the noise and aggressiveness of motorcyclists. And, of course: relief for all the minor injuries caused by cachaça, feijoada, or too much sun on the beach.

A thought experiment that is both amusing and raises a serious question: Why not, after all?

The Limits of Insurability

Paul provides the answer right away. Insurers, he soberly observes, are down-to-earth people. Imagination may be part of the business, but most policies stem from real, often painful experiences, not from wishful thinking. Exclusions don’t exist because of a lack of imagination, but because, in the end, risk is always measured against reality. Heartbreak and hangovers, as Paul’s conclusion pointedly puts it, remain uninsurable for the time being.

And yet there is more to this episode than just a chuckle. It serves as a reminder that, at its core, insurance is always a translation: of uncertainty into numbers, of fear into a contract, of risk into responsibility. The fact that this translation sometimes reveals its own limitations on the fringes of the absurd is part of the industry’s honesty and its charm.

Binci Heeb

Paul the Insurer has additional content that might interest you, such as a series of interviews with insurance industry executives.

See also: Listening and Speaking

What happens when a Brazilian insurer launches liability insurance policies for eleven occupational groups, and a podcast host imagines a whole world of “emotional insurance” based on them?
