Paul the Insurer 6: Ever Heard of a Stowaway?
24 September, 2025 | Current General Podcasts
The insurance world is on the brink of a potential upheaval and one of the most famous innovators of our time could be leading it: Elon Musk. In the latest episode of the “Paul the Insurer” podcast, the Tesla and SpaceX founder is compared to the visionary writer Jules Verne. Both share the gift of creating dreams of the future and turning them into tangible reality. But what does this have to do with insurance? A look at the ideas Musk could bring to the industry.
Jules Verne, a 19th century French author, is considered the father of science fiction. His stories about the exploration of unknown worlds – from the bottom of the sea to outer space – were based on the technologies available at the time and inspired generations. Elon Musk is described in the podcast as a modern Jules Verne who not only dreams, but acts: With companies such as Tesla, SpaceX, the Boring Company and Hyperloop, he turns visions into reality.
Podcast host Paul describes Musk as a “new Jules Verne” who is pushing the boundaries of what is possible and could therefore revolutionize the insurance industry.
Insurance as an embedded product
One of the most exciting ideas is the integration of insurance directly into the sale of Tesla vehicles. Instead of offering insurance as a separate add-on product, it could in future be sold as an “embedded product”, i.e. as an integral part of the vehicle purchase. This type of complete package would not only include warranties, but also all types of insurance.
Today, this still sounds like science fiction, mainly due to legal hurdles and regulatory requirements. Tesla only offers insurance as an add-on product in some regions so far. However, technological development is progressing faster than legislation and this could soon change.
Elimination of small print: more transparency and security
Another revolutionary step would be the abolition of the many exclusions and complicated clauses that characterize insurance contracts today. With his disruptive approach, Elon Musk could offer an all-risk insurance policy that largely dispenses with the “small print” and thus offers customers more security and clarity.
Between vision and reality: how quickly will change come?
The question remains: How long will it take for these innovations to become reality? Technological developments are often faster than legal changes. But Musk has already proven that he can achieve great things in a short space of time, for example by setting up a satellite network in space.
For those interested in insurance, the Paul the Insurer podcast offers extensive material to prepare for the coming changes and to play a role in this “battle of the giants”.
Rethinking insurance
Elon Musk could fundamentally change the insurance industry, from product design to customer communication. The vision of an integrated, transparent and technology-driven insurance system is no longer a distant dream, but a tangible future. Those who follow developments and stay informed today have the chance to be part of this revolution.
“Paul the Insurer” shows that insurance is more than just a profession, it is an opportunity to help shape the future.
