Winter vacations on the slopes abroad are a highlight for many Swiss people, but accidents can be expensive. If you know your insurance cover and take precautions, you can avoid unpleasant surprises and enjoy carefree days in the snow.
Employees who work more than eight hours a week for the same employer are also covered by compulsory accident insurance (UVG) abroad. However, there are differences in the scope of benefits depending on the country of travel. In countries with a social insurance agreement, Suva covers the costs at the local social tariff. Without such an agreement, the maximum costs charged are double those incurred for treatment in the most expensive public Swiss hospital. If you are treated in a private clinic, you often have to pay a co-payment. Supplementary insurance can be useful here.
Accident figures at pre-pandemic level
After a decline in the pandemic years, Suva is now once again recording around 35,000 skiing and snowboarding accidents a year, almost one in five of them abroad. Austria, France and Italy are the top destinations for snow sports accidents. In 2023, the most accidents were recorded in Austria (2561), France (2320) and Italy (1040).
Tips for a carefree winter vacation
Suva recommends that you avoid turning fun in the snow into a cost risk:
- Check insurance cover before you travel
- Save the Europ Assistance emergency number (041 848 724 144)
- Do not sign anything until you have consulted the insurance company
Safety starts with mindfulness
In addition to insurance cover, correct behavior also prevents accidents. The Slope Track app serves as a digital coach for snow sports fans. This season, special emphasis is also being placed on the topic of mindfulness: adapted speed, attentive skiing and consideration for others ensure greater safety on the slopes.
