Rising health insurance premiums and higher living costs continue to be the biggest concerns for families in Switzerland. At the same time, satisfaction with family life is high, but many are pessimistic about the future. These are the findings of the Swiss Family Barometer 2026 by Pro Familia Switzerland and Pax.

Financial burdens are a clear priority for families in Switzerland. According to the latest study, 49% of respondents cited health insurance premiums as their biggest concern, followed by rising prices (37%).

Other important topics are health (26%), housing costs (25%) and schools and education policy (23%). Dealing with the media and social media is also becoming increasingly important and concerns 22% of families.

Significant regional differences

The importance of individual topics varies greatly between the language regions. Youth violence is a particular concern for families in Ticino (23%) and French-speaking Switzerland (22%), while it is only a key issue for seven percent in German-speaking Switzerland.

Conversely, the school system plays a greater role in German-speaking Switzerland: 29% cite it as an important issue. This is significantly more than in French-speaking Switzerland (13%) and Ticino (9%). The picture is similar when it comes to dealing with social media.

High satisfaction, but concerns about the future

Despite the economic and social challenges, satisfaction with family life is high. A total of 79% of respondents say they are fairly or very satisfied.

At the same time, a pessimistic view of the coming years prevails: 76% expect the situation for families in Switzerland to deteriorate over the next three years.

Digital media shape everyday family life

Digital media have an ambivalent effect on family life. Around a third of families consciously use shared digital activities such as films, music or games.

At the same time, 31% report that media consumption reduces family time together. For 24%, it leads to more frequent conflicts, while 18% discover new shared interests through digital media.

Desire for more support with media education

Most parents feel that they are generally able to help their children use the internet and social media. Nevertheless, many would like additional support.

Almost half of respondents call for better protection for children on social media platforms and a ban on cell phones in schools. More support from schools and legal age restrictions for social media are also frequently mentioned.

Parents see themselves as the most important mediators of financial knowledge

The majority of parents feel competent when it comes to financial education. Over 90% say they are able to explain how to handle money to their children.

At the same time, almost half of families would like to see additional educational opportunities for children and young people. Most clearly see the responsibility for financial knowledge as lying with parents, supplemented by schools.

Families with young children under greater financial pressure

The financial situation of many families remains tense. Although 47% say that their income is sufficient, almost as many (46%) say that it is only just enough.

Families with young children between the ages of zero and three are particularly affected: More than half of them feel that their financial situation is strained.
